Log Cabin Hitty Day Two

I didn’t get much done today in the way of making the Hitty, but my husband did get another beam from the field and cut me some smaller blocks to use for my Hittys.

Here we are going to the field again to grab another beam.   This time Hitty Dot decided to join us, she’s very excited about having many new sisters and wants to see where they are coming from.  She didn’t visit on the first trip because she was too busy tormenting Flat Andrew to take much notice of what we were doing.

Road to field

This is the driveway to the back field, it sits about 3 acres away from the house.

Pappys field

Here’s another shot of the cabin, showing the back field.  Pappy cleared this field more than a century and a half ago by using a combination of saw, rope, barrels and a mule to cut trees down for the cabin and for pulling up the stumps to make room for crops.

Hitty Dot peeks into the cabin

Hitty Dot can’t hold her excitement in and scrambles up the wall to get a peek inside the cabin.  She’s too tiny to see that she could have just walked right in!

Hitty Dot gets scared

“I can’t see inside” says Hitty Dot “I’m climbing back down”.  Hitty Dot tries to climb back down the wall but gets scared and instead crawls to the side and sits down.  “Well this is nice, I’ll just sit right here and rest for a moment and gaze at the beautiful tree in front of me.”

Hitty Dot peeks into the cabin

Hitty Dot finally crawls from her perch and walk to the doorway of the cabin and peeks inside.

“Oh no wonder I couldn’t see inside” exclaims Hitty Dot “There are flat pieces of wood on the wall.  Will you make some Hittys from that wood also”? She asks.

“No, those pieces aren’t the right sort for making Hittys” I tell her,”Instead we will make boxes for Hittys to rest, this was an idea shared by Gale of the Hitty Girls group, and I think it’s a lovely idea”!

“Oh yes” squeals Hitty Dot “A resting box sounds lovely, will you be making one for me”?

“Yes” I say “You most certainly will have a box all your own once we get the wood removed and taken to the shop”.

Hitty Dot sees a peg

“What is that” asks Hitty Dot as she notices a small piece of wood stuck in one of the log.

“That’s a wooden peg” I reply “I don’t know why it was put there, but as you can see there are pegs going all the way up the wall in that same area”.

Hitty Dot grabs a peg

Hitty Dot scrambles up the wall and pulls the peg out of the wood.  “Can I have this piece”? she asks excitedly “I want to use it to make a footstool for my Hitty House”.

“Of course you may have that” I reply, “It’s the perfect size for a footstool for you, and it’ll look lovely in your home”.

Hitty sits with her peg

Hitty Dot scrambles to the old ladder lying in the cabin and sits while my husband grabs another beam to take up to the shop.

When we get back to the shop, my husband brings out the chain saw and cuts 12 pieces of wood that are perfectly sized to make more Hittys from.

He’s a bit camera shy so I didn’t take photos of him working, but  did get two good photos of the completed pieces of wood.

Beam

Here’s the newly cut beam sitting beside the beam that me and my daughter cut yesterday.  As one can see, the chainsaw cuts much faster and better than an ax and hacksaw.

12 Pieces from beam

We got 12 pieces of wood that I plan to split in half for a total of 24 Hitty sized blocks.

Each block will make either one body, 2 legs or 4 arms.

The rest of the beam will be cut later, for now this is plenty of small wood to keep me busy for the next few days.
